this book is set in an underground compound. the family had to locate there after the release if an atomic bomb. i have a feeling this entire book is going to be placed here. not just because of the title, but because it says how long they have been down there, and i think they will be down there a lot longer. Eli is the main character and the book is told through him. Terese is the sister and Eli says she's little-miss-perfect. she's fluent in french and a real smarty pants. Lexie seems to just sit around and watch horror movies a lot. Eli says her long black hair always masks her face. Mom and Dad are just trying to make everything a little easier on their kids. Eli had a brother, Eddy, who didn't make it into the compound. it's something that continues to haunt him.
The setting of the Compound is in the modern time period and is located in an underground bombshelter where the main characters are forced to go after a nuke strikes. This setting helps with the novel by showing what could be the end of the world and the main characters have to put up each other like a family for 15 year in a cramped enviroment. The main characters are Eli, the son who shuts off the world after his twin brother dies which starts an major internal confict with himself and helps him change throughout the novel. Rex the dad who is maintaining the compound in calm orderly way and his character not only shows it in normal fatherly way but through his actions as well.
I agree with Jessi's input that setting of novel is going to stay the same throughout the book. Just like she said with how its states that Eli and his family have lived in the compound a long time as well as stated in the book. I think will have a great impact on something like one of the character's sanity. The reason for me saying that is because in other books similar to this like the Shining the book not the movie one of the characters usually go insane from being cooped up with the same people for long periods of time.
one of the internal conflicts in The Compound is how lonely eli is, especialy without his twin brother. Eli has slowley isolated himself from the rest of the family, he doesnt enjoy spending time with any of them, especialy his little sister Terese, and Lexie, who's excessive watching of horror movies is kind of scary, big part of his loneliness comes from that fact that not everyone made it into the compound. I predict that this conflict will be resolved by spending time with one of his sisters. the tone of the book is kind of indifferent, you can tell the Eli is definetly getting tired of seeing the same sights every day, the only adventures he has is atempting to go into the rooms hes not allowed into.
I think the main internal conflict is within Eli. He feels responsible for the death of his twin brother. When they were going into the compound, his twin Eddy was left behind along with his grandmother. Eli always says how close he and Eddy were, and i think he will forever be haunted by the fact he has no twin anymore. I also think that the loss of his brother will make him issolate himself from others. I think the mood of this book is sympathetic. I feel so bad for these people, and especially for Eli.
The internal confict in Compound was Eli emotional struggle with himself to justify if the world ended or if his brother really died or not. I think this will be resolved as Eli slowly discovers the truth to everthing. An external conflict would be the conflict with Eli and Rex because Eli is slowly realizing the truth the Rex is hiding something and rebels against Rex's wishes to keep things the way they are now. I think this will in the truth affecting the whole family on taking sides. I would say the mood in this novel is showing in some way or form that Rex is making the family feel oppressed.
I disagree with Jessi's comment that Eli feels responsible for Eddy and gram's death because he finds out that they are alive. I do agree that Eli feels isolated from the world because he has been locked in a compound for six years. I agree with the mood being sympathetic because the author makes you feel sorry for them through the way he wrote the book.
I disagree with Wyatt's internal conflict because I feel that the internal conflict for Eli is choosing what side he would like to go with. I do agree with the external conflict being with Rex because Eli discovered that he was lying to him and the family which resulted in physical violence
I agree with Austin's input on how the tone will change the course of Eli's actions. Before as said in the book Eli closed himself off from the world one symbol showing this was his hair. The reason for me saying that is because throughout the novel it's his way of shutting people out. But Eli uses this as a method to confine the internal conflict of his brother's death.
I agree with Jessi's input on how the novel can sympathtic. At times you can notice how Eli reacts if someone touches him which shows that Eli is suffering at the idea his brother may actually be dead. But as the story progresses you can tell the author wants to get that slim hope that his brother is safe and sound. And not only reacts but the too at some points as you see that she has lost hope and does anything just so the family can survive which you the melacoholy of her feelings and her pain that she has to go through.
I would say that I'm satisfied with the ending of "The Compound". The reason I believe this nowel was chosen as the gateway book award was because of how that Eli and his family start to realize they might be the last survivors and what they do has a significant impact. Another could be the emotion that the novel can leave behind as he struggles to find the truth and save his family in the book. And finally I also think that since the main character is easily relatable could be another reason why it was nominated.
i was very satisfied with the ending of the book. i wasn't really epecting it. i am happy with the way the book ended. i think this is a gateway book because it makes you want to keep reading. there are so many twists and turns in this book that it will always keep you guessing. the way this book makes you think "what if?" is very powerful.
After reading I found the book was fast paced and great. The Compound was about Eli fled into a underground bunker or safehouse as the dad puts it after a bomb went off near their campground. The characters in the book are portrayed quite well and are believable in that this might have happen. Such as Eli for example he made for a great character since portrayed the average teenage youth that rebels against society in this case the methods his dad performs to run the place. The book is good but it does feel a little dry in that you know have read the same thing before, but it does pick up later in the middle as for everything else. I would say pick it up at the library its a good book so I give a 4 out 5.
